    Another Simple Object

I am now experimenting with rubber bands. I took this shot with rubber bands on an iPad app called soft box pro. I am hoping to advance this object (rubber bands, that is) into a new series.

Extremely creative. Not sure I'd know how to offer a critique.

I wonder if the bands could be brighter/more saturated, but that's reaching.

Thanks, Dray. Hopefully I will discover more as I go along. This was practically black and white until I messed with the exposure to get even this color.

Good thing you told us what I was. I was guessing random sloppy circles. I wonder if some diffused lighting above the ipad would help bring the color out more. Or, perhaps you could simply paint some in.
    mostly Nikon gear

Feel free to edit my images for critique, just let me know what you did.

Yes I would have to say extremely creative, but i'm unsure on what to offer as critique as well!

To me, it's too simple that I'm not sure it's a photograph

    Re: Another Simple Object

At first I too thought this was too simple to post and that it did look like a sloppy drawing. And its true that I could have arranged rubber bands on a canvas and called it a day. But I found that by photographing them, something changed. Photography transformed a simple object into something that, at least, resembles a drawing. Please note that I consider this shot to be only the beginning of a process and I am looking forward to introducing more "photographic" elements.

    Re: Another Simple Object

Really very nice, Arne. Reminds me of some images I've seen where people have used scissors, matchbooks, keys, sponges, etc in a very minimilist way as this with great results. Its all about the shapes and the layout. Color can add to the mix here as well.
Did you shoot this on top of the ipad screen? In order to grab more color and definition from your subject (the rubberbands) you would have to avoid light spillover which is common when shooting anything against white. Because the white surface reflects much light, what happens is that some of that light can spill and wrap around your subject causing blowout on the subjects edges as well as glare problems.
The best way to deal with it would be to first expose for your white background (ipad screen?) and make it so that its white or just a tad under (check your histogram to see that the white is not blowing out but just at the edge) Take your shot. chances are the rubberbands will come out looking like dark silhouettes. In that case you would add an over head light source just to illuminate the bands and bring out their colors.

i think your onto a good series here and looking forward to seeing what develops from it.
