    Another barn

I like the way the hill towers over this barn.
Would you crop some of the foreground?

Nope. The balance is good as is.

Cool shot. Love the way the mountain dwrafs the buildings. Looks like the mountain goes straight up. I'm not sure of this, but I believe the depth and the size of the mountain will be even more impressive by cropping half, or slightly more, of the foreground. But it's a good shot as is.
I wonder what this shot would look like coverted to B/W?

Something like this, I guess. I didn't think it would work well but decided to try it since you suggested it. I think it works pretty good so thanks for the nudge.

I like the first one. Maybe try and level it. Throw some saturation on the barn and separate it some from the background. Nice find Frog.

    Re: Another barn

    Hey Frog,
I find that if I tilt my camera vertically to the left, with the shutter button on top, I sometimes get a tilted shot. This seems the most natural way to do it, but when I tilt it to the right instead, with the shutter button on the bottom, it always comes out perfectly level.
Since there isn't much color, and a lot of contrast with the snow on the trees, I think the B/W works. Boards in the barn have much more detail too.

Why is everyone obsessed with level, when the world is sometimes delightfully tilted ?

LOL! And besides that my head sits tilted to the left.

I think that if you look at the trees that they look quite straight. If I made the barn look straight, the trees would be leaning right.
Ron, I don't remember which way I turned it but will remember that next time.

    Thanks for looking.

    Re: Another barn

It took me a long time to realize this, but when I tilt the camera left, with the shutter button on top, I'm reaching up and cross my body with my right hand, elbow in the air, and that's enough of a stretch to tilt the camera off plane slightly.
The other way, with the shutter button on the bottom, my elbows stay in closer to my body, and the camera sort of cradles in my right hand. With the eblows in, the camera is steadier too.

    Re: Another barn

Frog - I really like this shot. How you even saw this composition as such in the first place is amazing to me. It works incredibly well. The only thing I'm not sure of is that little bluish housing (whatever you call it) on the far right; somehow I'm wondering how things would look if it weren't partially cropped out.

That said, I'm a big fan of this photo. The colors and PS treatment (whatever you did) work almost perfectly. I say "almost," because like Greg, I only wish the barn were a bit more saturated to help it stand out from the background more prominently. I wouldn't touch the foreground at all; the color and texture add so much to the image as a whole.

Oh - and I also like that it's not totally level.

    Very nice work!

I like the color version better but agree it would be better with about half or a little more foreground cropped out. I don't know if you have tried it but I have the grid turned on in my D80 and it helps. It is only a slight grid and is not bothersome, Jeff

I really like the wall of trees and the barn is just the icing on the cake. It could have been a orange traffic cone and it'd still be amazing against that backdrop...ok maybe that's a stretch. I love it anyhow.

    Re: Another barn

Thankyou to all. This shot is getting more attention than I thought it would but that goes to show what I know.
I've seen this shot many times for many years but not with snow which adds that something extra.
Here it is with some saturation added to the barn and a slight straightening which I will now admit does help and the trees still look straight.
Thanks to all of the advice, I now like this shot better than I did before but sorry, Jeff, after a try at it, I do like it better without cropping foreground. Thankgoodness I shoot in raw so I can change my mind again sometime.

    Re: Another barn

I think that the subject (barn) is too small. It seems like you need to either commit to the barn or the trees. With that being said, I cropped the photo to put a little bit more tension to it while de-saturating it. Also, use the burn tool to darken the foreground so it brings more focus to the barn. It's a great idea of a photo, it just needs to be closer. Thoughts?

    Re: Another barn

I like both the colour and the B&W, each has its own merits. The colour one could do with a little more contrast? No need to crop the foreground, it kind of helps the mountain tower even more, making the barn look smaller, more nestled in, which is the look I prefer! The saturation helped. Tilted or not, I like it both ways, first version just looks like the barn is built on a slight slope (actually I think I prefer this, trees still look straight to me!). Great work, gorgeous barn

Ty, Mette and Greg! I usually get so focused on one part of a photo and then leave other parts un-attended. Thanks to all the suggestions here, I think I can get it right and am seriously considering a print..
