Nice work, the only thing I would have done(although I probably wouldn't have thought about it at the time is her hair is cut off at the top, it was the first thing my eyes went to, just kind of an out of place crop, other than that, good!

    What the Gimp said...

    I am with the Gimp..
Cutting off her head like that is no good.
Either show it all or crop or frame just above her pinky.
Althought I am betting you were going for a flattering portrait rather than something more moody. If that were the case, it would be best to show all of her head.
Watch that kind of stuff when you are looking through the viewfinder..

OK, that makes two votes for not cutting off the hair.

Now that is a much better composition, it pulls you right to the face with no distractions

I like the composition but I think the lighting is a little flat and she sort of has the "deer in the headlights" look.

    Re: Amanda

Her right arm looks HUGE due to how it's posed, the head is cocked in a really uncomfortable looking way, and the lighting is too flat. Sit her in front of a large window to one side of her and play with posing. Leave the on-camera flash for family parties.

    Re: Amanda

I'm with Seb on this, in that the pose looks uncomfortable and unnatural, as if was entirely created for that moment with the camera. As soon as you become conscious of that you feel as if you are seeing a presented image of the person, rather than being given an intimate glimpse of how that person really is - and seeing the 'truth' of a person seems to be the ideal for portrait photography.

I have real trouble with portraits, but if I was going to give any advice I'd say try and keep that sort of composition in mind, but see if you can achieve it more 'naturally' - then I think you could end up with something really good.

    regards,

    matt
