Great dof on this. I like that I can see the stamen clearly for almost their entire length.
    mostly Nikon gear

While its a good pic, sorry but as a flower shot I dont think it distinguishes itself enough from the rest. Flower shots are way overdone and as such each shot really needs to be extremely unique. Good exposure and dof, the bokeh looks a little rough.

Thanx for the input. I know what you mean as far as flower shots needing to be unique. I was merely testing the camera lens as i am still learning the basics.

For a first shot I think it's great. You're just getting accustomed to what your lens can do. Kudos on the shot. Not sure if you're using any filters at the moment but the petals seem a little washed out. Perhaps a filter might help make it pop a little more?

Re: 1st shot with new lens

Congratulations on the new lens, you are off to a good start. I would like to suggest taking a picture with and without the UV filter on when you get it. You may find that you loose detail in your pictures. I purchased a Nikon 70--300VR lens and they gave me a UV filter to put on it. After having the lens for about a year and not being happy with the pictures I was getting I decided to remove the filter and when I did there was a noticeable improvement. They had given me a UV filter for a film camera instead of a digital camera and it was also a cheaper filter. I was on my way to a photography meeting to see if one of the members could sell me lens on ebay to get rid of it when I decided to remove the filter and do a test. All I can say is that by getting a higher quality UV filter for a digital camera it made a big improvement and I am now happy with the lens. Bottom line is after you get the filter do some test shots with and without the filter to see if it makes a difference. Not all filters are created equal and some may even make things worse, Jeff
