Nikon punched in the face with Canon 550D.

With the recent launch of Canon EOS 550D (T2i) Nikon's been punched in the face.It got a crazy 18 MP, full HD capture at 30fps and 7D's metering system. I am hoping Nikon comes out with a D90 successor soon or else its gonna loose the market.Any news of a new Nikon, i would love to know.

I was about to buy D90 but iam gonna wait and watch what Nikon is upto.

Nikon is going for bigger pixels and better noise reduction. When Canon came out with the 18Mpix 7D then Nikon updated the D300 to the D300s - and just added the possibility to do video.

I don't think that Nikon is going to come out with a camera like the 550D anytime soon but that's just my opinion.

The question I ask myself is - will Canon come out with a 60D or is that the end of the line for the xxD cameras?

It will be really sad if Nikon dosent come out with a camera to compete with 550D soon.May be Nikon is too busy launching its fancy lenses.

Those fancy lenses are important. In the long run, they're more important than the cameras. I have lenses I've been using for over ten years while camera bodies have come and gone. As for Nikon needing to compete, I think they're doing fine. In fact, a good portion of the pros and high-end photographers have been saying just the opposite for the past couple of years - they've been saying that Canon needs to step up and compete with Nikon's low light image quality.

Don't be too dazzled by the number of pixels a camera has. It doesn't tell the whole story. I would be surprised if the 550D's image quality is truly better than the D90. If you'd like to do your own comparison, check our sample photos section and compare the EOS 7D to the D90 studio samples. The 550D uses the same sensor as the 7D, although with some processing differences. So the 550D should be comparable to the 7D in terms of image quality, although we'll have to wait to find out if it has more noise at high ISO settings. In any case, my bet would be that the D90's lower pixel count ultimately delivers better image quality - especially above ISO 800.

As far as video goes, Nikon is a bit off the back. It looks to me like that's where Canon is working to be the leader right now. Although, to be fair, most people don't really need the video specs that Canon is delivering. I've been shooting a bit of video and honestly, I wish my 7D had the ability to capture 720p at 30 FPS. Everything I do is going to YouTube and I just don't need 1080p video resolution. It just means more storage and slower editing. I expect it's the same for 80% of the rest of the photographers out there who are starting to shoot video.

The annual PMA tradeshow is coming up in a couple of weeks. If Nikon has anything new to announce, that's where it will happen. However, I think they're probably done with this round of camera introductions. And a bird (camera) in the hand is better than two in the bush. In other words - having a D90 to shoot with right now is better than waiting for a camera that may or may not be coming

There will always be a later and greater camera that comes out after you purchase a camera so you will always be waiting for the next big thing. I know people like this personally that have to own the latest and greatest and have never taken the time to learn how to get the most out of what the have before moving on. Getting a new camera is nice but in my opinion you will get more improvement in your photos by advancing your skills as compared to worrying about who has the latest and greatest equipment, Jeff.

I highly doubt that Nikon will loose the market. Most people, like myself, are rather locked into the Nikon system with large selection of lenses, that switching over to Canon over a T2i...would be shooting one's self in the foot.

I'm not in either camp here, but please take this Brand Trolling somewhere else. This site is one of the few not totally infected and I would like to see it stay that way. - TF

I don't think he's trolling. I think this is an honest post. It's our job to let evilcruze know that the specs he's looking at don't matter nearly as much as the photographer behind the camera

Maybe I'm over reacting (and apologize if so), but I would hate to see this site trashed like so many others. Phrases like, "…Nikon's been punched in the face.”, “…its gonna loose the market.” And “…Nikon is too busy launching its fancy lenses.” are more often intended to illicit emotional responses than discussion. – TF

Cool. I didn't see your post as a really negative one. But sometimes we can be a little sensitive because this is one of the friendliest photography communities on the Web. Most of us are more interested in truly sharing and learning and not that interested in waving our cameras around arguing about who has a bigger lens

If you're not interested in video, then I think you'll be really served by the D90. Plus, you'll still have video if you want it. You might even consider the D5000. I've used the D5000 and the D90 and as far as useablity goes, I prefer the D5000 because of the tilt-swivel LCD. Plus, the D5000 would save you a bit of money which you could apply to a better lens.

The reason some are interpreting this as 'brand bashing' is the title of the post.
I reacted that way at first, too.

Well, it did get our attention

I think the way the community reacts is more important than the title. If we overeact, then things get out of hand. If we respond rationally and in a friendly way, then any potential flame wars will quickly be diffused. I think this thread is a perfect demonstration. It could have gone down in flames. But because everyone was level-headed and helpful, it didn't. Good job, fellas!
