I'm going to answer my own question here. If someone has any better ideas go ahead:
Q>> I was out on the beach in the rain with my D60+18-200 and all of a sudden by camera won't shoot when I try to zoom in something a long way away. The little green focus light doesn't come on, even if I focus manually. Things are normal with other lenses.
A>> Nikon cameras will not shoot if the battery is too low or (in most modes) if they can't get focus. It sounds like you've got sand/water in the focussing mecanism and it won't go all the way to infinity. If you absolutely have to have the shot then set the smallest aperture possible (to increase depth of field) and switch to Continuous focussing mode which will fire regardless of whether focus is good or not.
24 hours later..
Q>> OK it hasn't dried out but I've looked closelly at the results and the lens seems OK up to about 85mm and at shorter distances up to 200mm. I must have a working tele lens to do the sunset over the Alhambra in Granada plus there's the Feria in Sevilla next.
A>> Head for the nearest city and look for an economical solution like the 55-200 AF-S (to work with the D60). Don't worry too much about the Alhambra - the Great Postcard Shot was taken from the top of a church tower that you can't get to
Q>> OK I found a Sigma 55-200 HSM which works just great with the D60. Must write a review of it when I get back.
