    D90 Settings

I just purchased a D90 and am curious what settings people are using as their 'default' mode. I've read through the Ken Rockwell article and a few other articles on the web, but I'd like to hear from those in this forum. I'm specifically interested in what level of sharpening and saturation you've found to work well. (I know this is up to everyone's individual taste, I'd just like to hear what you think.)

I shoot mostly travel photos: landscapes, buildings and people. I do like some decent sharpening (without artifacts though) and generally prefer the brighter colors that come from higher saturation. I think the 'vivid' setting might be too much though. I shoot in RAW and can do some post processing although I'd like to keep it to a minimum as much as possible.

Any other suggestions on settings would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on your new camera purchase,I agree with you that the D90 Vivid setting is too much. With the D80 I have found the Vivid mode to be quite wonderful.

Most of the time. I'm using standard mode with sharpening at 8, contrast 1, saturation 0, brightness 1, hue 0, Auto iso,Auto WB, Auto Active D-lighting.I also leave the camera in High speed shooting mode quite often. I'm still experimenting as well. I've been shooting with the D90 for only 3 months. :O)

    Re: D90 Settings

I have been waiting to see if a D90 owner responded first. I have the D80 and hope to get the D90 soon. The Magic Lantern DVD on the D80 takes you through the setting and also tells you what they would recommended for each of the setting with a review at the end. I think it is a very good DVD and helps a lot with learning the camera. When you need to review a subject it can easily be found and accessed from the menu so it can be watched again. I haven't seen the one for the D90 but I do plan on getting it when I purchase the camera. I do believe it is worth spending the money for and will be a very good information reference, Jeff

Thank you for the responses. I'm not familiar with the Magic Lantern DVD but I'll check it out. Do you find the DVD better than Nikon's Digitutor?

Yes I do because the digitutor is by Nikon and just explains how the features work. The Magic Lantern DVD Digitutor is along the same lines as the Digitutor but it gives you a perspective from someone that actually uses the camera and tells you why to use some options and to stay away from others. It will also give you suggestions for settings and why they were chosen. Both are good but I think buying the Magic Lantern DVD is worth the investment, Jeff
