    Yellowstone Bobcat

Ran across this bobcat in Yellowstone Park. Within minutes, it had disappeared over the top of the hill - but not before stopping to 'pose' several times. Here is one of those stops.

Congratulations on the Featured Photo, Karl! I just posted a link to this thread on our Facebook Fan Page.

I like bobcats! That's a nice sharp photo. Can you tell us a little more about it? What focal length lens did you use and how far away were you?

Thanks so much John. Like so many wildlife photos, this was just a matter of right place, right time. I ran across it in Yellowstone Park - but the cat didn't want to stay around and hang out with me... I photographed it as it moved across and up the hill until it disappeared. I waited around after it was gone and about a half-hour later it showed up again. It was quicker this time and made it into the trees before I could even get another shot.

If I understand correctly, a deer was hit by a car near this location several days later. A number of other people watched this cat (presumably) and some fox feed on the carcass the next day.

This photo was shot with a Canon 50D, using a Canon 300mm f2.8 lens with a 1.4X extender. The cat was probably 30 yards away??? I'm not that good with distances - but that's probably close. The original image is cropped a bit to produce the square format I used. I also printed this photo at 10"x20" to take advantage of the log lying across the horizontal... Can't decide which format I like best. There are other shots on my website.

This was an exciting shot... as you can tell by my lengthy response. Thanks again for the nice comments. I didn't even realize this was made the Featured Photo. How cool!
