    Winter 07-08 Bird ID thread.

PAULNJ!!! I need help.. on the first 2 for sure I think I have the last one right but since I am already picking your brain I figured I'd throw an easy one in for ya =P

I have no idea on this one but I am guessing Grey Jay from the birding guide I have in front of me

Possibly a Great Horned Owl or a Long Eared Owl... very bad shot I appologize but it was one of only 2 frames shot before he kept flying out of range of a better one.

And lastly I am about 90% positive this is a Juvenile Bald Eagle.

That first one looks like a Norther Shrike to me.

Northern Shrike it is. Never seen one of those guys before. Gotta do some research about them now. I am now about 80% sure it was a Great Horned and 100% sure that the Eagle is definitely an Imm. Bald

Check out this guys blog. About 2/3 of the way down this page, he talks about the Northers Shrike, and even has some video of one that landed very close to him.

PaulNJ is currently experiencing computer technical difficulties. But I'll stick this thread to get some winter species going.

Welcome back to the real world

PC - i.e. Bill Gates - related issues? I've heard so little flack from Apple customers that I'm starting to believe them. Just might have to buy a family iMac and see...

They are in the US by the millions as vagraints. trash birds because they displace rare cavity nesting birds(red-headed woodpeckers, bluebirds...). If not for bluebird boxes, most bluebirds would be homeless .

I am almost tempted to shoot them off my feeder all the time... but I just throw snowballs at them instead.

My bird feeder at work has taken more 12gauge bird shot than seed ...shhh

We welded it up on a rainy day and hang it with a chain.....

I cannot tell if this is a dark morphed RT or if it is a Broad Winged hawk.

I don't even need an image to answer that question

You would be hard pressed to find a broud-winged hawk ANYWHERE in Canada on october 15 and don't think you would find one in Texas at that time either most years.

    Redtailed hawk for sure.

I took walk through the Six-Mile Cypress Preserve in Fort Myers the other day and came across this guy. I think it is a Green Heron but how it got that name is a puzzle as it sure is short on green. I see a slight-blue green tinge on the back.

Re: Winter 07-08 Bird ID thread.

This fellow was sleeping up on the tree about two storeys high. I think it's some kind of owl but don't know what exactly. I thought the ears look like those of a cat. Then somebody told me they were horns. Horns? But, it was windy up there and so, I think, the "horns" look bent.

    Winter 07-08 Bird ID thread.-caught-sleeping.jpg

It could look sharper but I was too lazy to take the tripod off my back :blush2: It was dark up where it was, too, with all the branches and leaves around it and so I threw in some fill flash.

Oh, I was told there was another one sitting on the other side of the tree, too.

It's not a blue heron, is it?
