    Sweetgum and a Finch

Saw a large sweetgum tree being swarmed by a flock of goldfinches. It took some time to get close enough to isolate just one out in the open and against a suitable backdrop.

Not the most interesting subject, but not the typical background either - I think.

Very nice, I think. The finch is facing left and is on the left side of the shot. Can you move it to the right side of center?

Real nice shot Loupey, the tree is something new to me and really adds to the shot.

Thanks. Nah, I was composed to show the sweetgum seedpods trailing off to the rear right but the the finch wouldn't cooperate.

Besides, having a subject look "out of" instead of "in to" a frame adds unbalanced tension to a shot

    Thanks a lot!

Here's another version - doesn't showcase the sweetgum as well though.

Loupey, I really like that first one. I wouldn't change anything about it. I think you have this bird thing perfected, Jeff

I wouldn't say perfected, but I admit I have been totally absorbed shooting birds lately. I don't think I shot more than a handful of macros in nearly a year - except for dragonflies. And dragonflies are more birds than insects

This birding thing is getting expensive

    Thanks, Grandpaw.

Are goldfinches typically a small bird? He looks so inferior to the sweetgum tree, which I like. I also like the composition and all. Good shot!

    Re: Sweetgum and a Finch

Thanks, Dan. Goldfinches are sparrow-sized and the sweetgum seed pods are golf-ball sized.

    Appreciate the looksie.

Very nice work, Loupey! I like both #1 and #2. #1 for context/environment and #2 for emphasis on the bird.

    Great background.

Like I said to one of the guys I ran into in one of my outings: "You've picked the wrong hobby - photography - and picked the wrong subject - birds - to shoot." I suggested him to shoot landscape

BTW, I prefer the second one
