Hey, stranger, I was wondering where you wondered off to. Hope you didn't get stranded in all the snow up there :p
I have no idea on the bird. But I'll be more than happy to stick this thread

Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
These birds were either staying high up in the trees or in the thick bushes. This is a close up so I'm using it, a spring and fall bird for me.

It was still too dark to get a decent shutter speed so this is all I got... Maybe a ring necked duck?

Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
Hard to see him , but i think its a Wood Duck. This guy had the weirdest walk , almost like 2 steps forward and one back.
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
not a WOODCOCK , but a common snipe.... close though.
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
Thats the one i was looking for ,left my book at work. Woodcock :) dont think its a common Snipe Paul , it has no neck and has real short legs :)
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
while it's in woodcock habitat. It looks more snipe to me than woodcock......
but after further review.... the angle hides the tan and it is indeed a WOODCOCK.

MIKE T,I love this photo-
It reminds me of a Chinese painting...wonderful,the contrast of the head against the background.

Think this is a American Bittern, i have never seen one of these before .And boy do they ever make a loud noise something like a 10 pound bullfrog lol:D
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
woodcock was my first thought when I saw it.
though I've never seen one in the wild here - probably because of that camouflage !
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.

Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
I have no idea what this guy is or where to begin looking in my birding guide. I shot him in Cauyga Ontario during a drift race I was covering. I got exactly 3 frame of him before he blasted off away from me due to the noise from the cars and this is the best I could do unfortunately.
Any ideas Paul?
**Edit** I found something that looks close with the Bobolink.... am I correct?
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
that is indeed a male bobolink..... the song(had to be singing on territory) was the metalic computer generated sounding noise you heard... R2D2 like :)

Thought I was seeing a female warbler until I pointed my camera at him. Saw the red eyes so I'm thinking a Red-eyed vireo? :)
Neat markings whatever it is.

I finally got a grab shot of this guy ,He seem very shy , i had noticed him hanging out in a certain area but have never been able to get a picture so far this is the only one i have for a ID . I think its a Indigo or Blue Bunting im not sure Paul . Im hoping that he sticks around for a better shot in the future. :) ( Hoping for a 150-500mm by the end of summer lol )
-
Re: Spring 2008 Bird ID Thread.
was it near a field or powerline cut.... sure was :D
No blue buntings anywhere near you and blue grosbeak would be a great find that far north....
It's an indigo bunting.
