Took these today, since the weather has been so nice ive been taking my time out in the field and stopping for long photography sessions.... to bad its suppose to get cold again this weekend.









all shot as found, except the next 2, the red eft was running away so i simply placed him back on the leaf he was on when i flipped the coverboard.

Great series, you must know your reptiles to be able to locate them like this. I believe I've only seen one snake in the last 3 years of wandering about with my camera.

thanks scott, Well first of all these are all salamanders (amphibians) not reptiles :-D (except the last pic of the millipede)

second of all in some areas salamanders are more abundant than any other vertebrate group. so you just have to know where to look (and some times when).

second, i don't go out looking for a specific type, i just go out looking for any kind and photography what i see.... these 4 species are probbably the most 4 abundant i see down here.

and lastly im performing field work for my masters thesis looking at salamander communities of ephemeral streams, so i have traps set up (pitfall, and coverboards) that prettey effectively sample them.



snakes are much harder to find ( maybe cause im not focused on finding them). but they are less common and can be sight specific. i hardly ever see large snakes in the forest. Last summer i found 1 small copperhead, a few garter snakes and then ring neck snakes that live under things.... the same as salamanders.

The only kind of salamander I've ever seen are tiger salamanders.
