    More flowers with tubes

With the crappy weather, and my truck in the shop, I decided to play around in the house yesterday after work.

    #1 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro with 12mm tube. SS 1/100 @ f/16
    #2 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro with 12mm tube. SS 1/60 @ f/16
    #3 50mm f/1.8 with 36mm tube (I think) SS 1/60 @ f/22
    #4 50mm f/1.8 with 36mm tube (I think) SS 1/60 @ f/16
    #5 50mm f/1.8 with 36mm tube (I think) SS 1/60 @ f/16

All were shot at ISO 200 and lit with the 580 EX.

    Thanks Paul & Knight.

Knight, not much has sprouted here yet either. In fact, we just got hit by a winter storm that dropped 3" of snow on us, and they are calling for more tonight. We did have one daffodil but I don't think it survived. These are flowers from the store.

    Nice colors!

Michael, I'm curious - your 100mm macro goes 1:1 magnification by itself - why add tubes to it? I may be wrong but your images don't appear to be greater than life-size.

Is it to add working distance? If that is the case, your 100mm macro is being used like the 100mm non-macro version (in case people viewing this thread have that particular lens instead of the macro). I recently bought the 85mm f/1.8 and initial tests with the tubes are spectacular.

    Please clarify. Thanks!

I really don't have a specific reason for trying out the tupes with my 100mm macro. I just grabbed a couple lens, and started playing. I will have to do some experimenting with the lens by itself, and with the tubes to see if there is much difference in magnification.

    OK, I understand

For others out there: a true "macro" lens is really just an ordinary lens which has extension built-in to allow it to focus closer than normal. True they are optimized to produce a flatter field of view at close distances. But this difference can only be appreciated if you are taking pictures of flat subjects (copy work). In the real world, this difference can be hard to spot.

Still, if anyone out there has BOTH the 100mm f/2 (with tubes) AND the 100mm f/2.8 macro, I'd love to see a side-by-side of the same subject at the same magnification!

Remember all, if you don't own a "true" macro, don't think that you can't produce a good macro image (that's a lot of negatives - I think I said what I wanted to say ).

Nice work Mike. I like the transmitted light in #4 especially. Don't have an angled version of that, do you?

Thanks Chunk. I don't have and angled version, other than this one. But when I moved the camera, I also moved the light source. I kinda like the two streaks of light going through the middle of the flower.

Lovely shots and the colours are wonderful, makes me want to go and get some tubes right now - however the bank balance says no.

    Re: More flowers with tubes

This new one is also very nice. I'd suggest burning in on the brighter leaves around the edges to concentrate attention on the light streaks in the center. Hope you don't mind...

    Re: More flowers with tubes

I don't mind at all Chunk, in fact, it's much appriciated. I do have another version where I burned the brighter pink leaves a bit. I also burned in all the green leaves so they are completly black. I didn't like it as much as this version, but I think it was because of the burning I did on the green in the BG. I will do another version where I just tone down the bright pink areas.

    Thanks!
