First flight for a baby eagle, but it sure didn't want to.

Had some fun this morning out at an eagle nest today. We expected this things to start flying last week but they just sit in the tree.

But today the big one got on the edge and when pops brought a bloody bass it wanted to get back but pops was in the way and all haties broke loose!!

    1. Sitting on the edge thinking about it but not ready.

    2. Food!!

    3. Noo! Don't jump on me!

    4. AHH!!

    5. This might hurt!

    6. Im outta here!

    7. I can fly!

[rant] This 7D seems to get really sharp shots sometimes and others they are just BLAH. Like in a burst 2 or 3 will be super sharp but 3-4 will be OOF. It's really annoying. I have messed with all of the setting and still don't get why it does this. [/rant]

I hope Eric got some good stuff he will share too!

Fun time we had this morning! Seems we all got a treat with the way the first flight took place.

    Nice action shots!

I have mirror images of your pic #1 & #2. I was so amazed at what was going I missed the captures of them falling. Going back tonight!

Kurt are you using continuous focus and are you keeping the focus point on the subject? Try doing a burst on something that is not moving and if they come out in focus. If all the shots come out in focus that means the camera is doing it's job and the problem is you. If they are blurry on a stationary subject I would look closer at the camera being the problem. You have some nice shots there by the way, Jeff

    Thanks!

Yes, I'll shoot a still subject and will still get only a few photos in focus in a burst. I always use ai-servo but control it with my af button unless I need the IR focus beam from my flash then I will go to one time focus.

So far I have about 40,000 shots (I do ALOT of sports) with this camera since mid December and have tried all of the settings and getting a shot in focus is still hit and miss.

Nice to see they are finally getting out into the world, maybe not the way we might expect, but at least they are fledging. Nice sequence, thanks for posting.

Does the problem occur with all lenses?

    Excellent series BTW!

Some are worse then others. It's real bad with a 18-200 but not as bad with a 85 1.8 but still not how I think it should perform. It's always... "Lets hope it was in focus this time"

I'm glad you brought this up, Kurt. I've been blaming my technique, camera settings, and everything else, but I at the same juncture as you. I mainly have my 100-400 on my 7D, and get the same hit and miss results you report. I may switch to my 700-200 with 2X TC to see if I get the same results. If you find a solution, short of sending the camera to Canon, let me know!

Have either of you tried microadjustment calibration your lenses? I know the 7d can do that.

I doubt that would help. I have some that are super shap and some that are blurry. Even when shooting a still subject it will be half and half on if I get a sharp photo.

With my 300 on my 50D with a slow moving subject and can get sharp photos more times then with the 7D.

I don't know, it could be front or back focusing intermittently if it's not calibrated. The fact that its worse on some lenses than others would make me lean towards calibration being just so slightly off.

Great action sequence! Great timing being there when papa decided it was time for him to fly.
