    Easy Pickin's

The red-wing chicks have hatched and so every clump of reeds along the banks has hungry nests in it.

The females are flighty and easily flushed but the males are confrontational and bark nasties at me. Easy to get up close and personal in their personal space.

But getting in-flights of the males was actually kind of tough - they have a drooping flight and so just when I get them framed and focused, they fall out of the viewfinder just before they land. They also prefer to land behind you and get spooked if you look directly at them.

Nice captures. I haven't gotten any good images of them yet. I never seen a female yet.

Great shots. You sure have his feathers ruffled in the first one. My personal fave is the second one. It has good color and great timing.

    Re: Easy Pickin's

    Thanks for looking, guys.

AE - yeah the females are fairly nondescript except for the stripe across their forehead and the faint epaulets.

    Knight:

    ISO 500
    f/4.5 (the female at 5.6)
    1/2000s
    300mm

Look for a perched male. He will most likely be near the nest. Walk up to where you would like to photograph him as he will typically return if you stay put. The female will scurry about hiding behind branches/reeds, but if you get her out in the open, she will likely have a bill full of insects.

    Thanks, Paul!

Here's a few more taken recently (5 days later than the original set) of the exact same male RWBB. Because of where the nest is, I can only approach from one direction. So the angle of the setting sun in these is not ideal. In fact, the sun in virtually directly behind me at times - you can just see the shadow from my head at the bottom of the stalk in #3 here. The colors might see "off" but they are from the extremely warm and unusually clear sunset. The last rays of light were gone just minutes after I took #3.
