    Daddy's Home

I spent 3 hours watching this one bird box today. The male stopped by to make sure everything was OK in the nest. There were 4 eggs in the nest when I got there, 5 when I left.

Beautiful shot! Do you put out the box(es) for them? - TF

Thanks. Yes, I put the boxes out. I started out with 2 boxes a few years ago, and added 3 more the following. Currently this is the only box that has anything in it. I usually get wrens in a couple of them, and I had chickadee's in one last year as well. I'm thinking of making a couple more boxes to put out too. If you do a search, you should be able to find some other threads where I talked about putting up the boxes.

I put up 4 boxes around my yard (3.5 acres) and have had nothing but wrens and chickadees in the past. This year I've done nothing but chase the house sparrows away so far. Though I have a little open area, I think it's getting too overgrown for bluebirds to nest. Great for a lot of other little birds and creatures - just not bluebirds. - TF

Your work has paid off. He certainly is a little beaut. Around here, it's the swallows that take over the Bluebird boxes.

    Re: Daddy's Home

Thanks Mike. It's been a long time since I went out and just sat and waited to see what would take place in front of me. It was very relaxing, and photos were just the icing on the cake. Just getting out and enjoying some piece and quiet was the best part.

AE, this is a male eastern bluebird. The females look pretty much the same, only not as bright in color.

WOW, I didn't notice how over the top the blue was on this image when I originally posted it. Here is a more realistic version.

Very nice! I envy you having such beautiful birds nesting on your property.

    Re: Daddy's Home

    Thanks Paul and Scott.

Scott, I wish this was on my property. I treat it like it is, but it's actually an area owned by the state historical society. It's open to the public year round. There is about 43 acres with mostly prairie, and some woods, along with two streams that run along 2 edges of the property. The best part about it is that I almost always have the entire place to myself.
