I too shot this bird today but was not sure what it was until you posted yours,i was going to ask for assistance, but not needed. thanks for posting your shot,great by the way,here's mine,if you don't mind ,( not trying to hi jack your thread ).
It's been my belief for a long time that this bird employs a most effective public relations firm. The pictures are marvelous, but there's no clear evidence it's even close to being blue. False advertising, and that confuses proper identification as well. I'm hardly an expert, but I've seen/photographed these herons on the ground, and they always tend to look far more gray than blue. Great gray heron.
