    Big Horn Sheep

Each fall I try to get out somewhere and take photos of Rocky Mountain Bighorns. Here's a few I have taken in the past couple years.

Nice! Like you've said before, there's no sustitute for getting close. - Terry

    Re: Big Horn Sheep

These sheep photos were actually taken during the rifle hunting season. I think most people believe sheep are very tough to get close to, but contrary to belief, they are one of the easiest critters to close the distance on, if you know how to do it. I learned through 50 years of bowhunting how to get close to most animals, or at least what it takes to get close.

I let sheep see me. I never approach from above them. I always come from below them and stay in the open so they can always have me in view. They like their escape route to be above them. I just let them watch me and slowly mosey right into them. Some of these photos were taken at less than 10 yards and most from less than 20 or 30 yards.

This ewe, was laying down behind and rock and let me walk to about 6-7 yards, but it took me over an hour to accomplish this, from the time she saw me. She finally accepted me as no threat, and I wasn’t. The same technique was used on the other sheep.

Here are few other photos from those photo sessions.
