When you are on vacation and are in somewhere that you will be all day is there some precaution for heat getting to your extra camera and or lenses that are left in the car? Jeff

Take the battery and card out, use an anti-moisture pack in your case - they come with just about everything - the little tiny packs that come with shoes, leather things, purses, etc to prevent moisture. I have a bunch on my photo-bag in each compartment. That will help prevent humidity from getting into your camera. I don't use ice packs due to the moisture. Keep it out of the sun!

Shade the car, keep the car temperature down.

ice chest or insulated picinic bag. A good cold water bottle instead of ice should do it.

    Sleeping bag in the trunk

This usually happens when I'm at some event in summer and there's no space in hotels so I camp. In the day I leave the sleeping bag(s) in the trunk of the car in a big bundle and bury anything sensitive to heat right in the heart of the bundle. The sleeping bag stops me losing heat at night but it also works the other way and stops heat getting in during the day.

The most vulnerable element to heat is probably the Lithium-Ion battery (don't forget the spare as well). Lithium-Ion batteries age very quickly if they get hot.

I would never, ever, under any circumstances, in any weather, leave my gear in the car. Unless I'm within twenty feet or so, and then I'd just leave the windows open. I've had too much of my equipment "liberated" to leave it alone outside of my house. If that means carrying a larger bag, so be it.

When I have the top off of my jeep, it is rifled almost every day for change. The glovebox is always opened, the ashtray always ripped out. I don't even bother putting the ashtray back in these days. I carry my insurance and registration in a doggy bag with me everywhere because I won't leave anything valuable in the car. People will break your windows when the doors are UNLOCKED and the top is OFF to get into the ashtray looking for change. Cars are probably the least secure place I can think of. Even if you have one with a full-time lid.

Yes Yes and Yes, in the Columbia River Gouge most of the Water Falls are very close to a large city and close to the freeway. You park your car and you have a 50-50 chance that it will be broken into the more out of view from the main road the better the chance of it happening. The view points and trail heads are just to close to the bad guys with easy access. Unluckily we also have very high unemployment 10%+ last time I heard.

While we were in Pigeon Forge we decided to take a 1 1/2 trolley ride through Pigeon Forge and up through Sivierville. and when we got back to our car we left in the parking lot I found that I had left the side door open with my Nikon D80 with the 70-300VR zoom attached setting in plain sit inside the open door. The good Lord was looking out for my that time, Jeff

I haven't used my sleeping bag trick for years - it was mostly useful for keeping film cool.

When I go out today I have only one bag which stays with me and has everything I need (including money, papers, clothing, etc) until I go back to a secure base (hotel). When I'm on a trip I take mostly small, light, inexpensive gear. The big stuff is for point missions
