Using AV Mode with the Highest Aperture and then The Lowest

I am trying to take a photo for a course and not quite sure how to do it. I am suppose to take a picture of a Graveyard, fence or other object that has more than 3 objects in it. I took a picture of gravestones, one at f 1/4 and the other at f22. What I am trying to achieve is a picture with the one of the object completly in focus and the others blurred, and then all of subject in focus (same picture - different aperture. I am to do this on AV mode.
Not sure if I should have lens on manual or not
my pictures came out dark except one this I am sure is because I was not watching the light.

I am using a Canon 30D digital slr, and was using a 200 zoom lens.

If you are in Aperture Priority Mode, Auto Focus:
    - Set the aperture at f/4 and the shutter speed should set itself to get the proper exposure.
    - Set the aperture at f/22 and the shutter speed should again set itself (5 times as long) to get the proper exposure.
For both, focus on the middle object.
If this doesn't work, post again with the aperture (f/stop), shutter speed and ISO for each.

Put it on a tripod. Anything slower that 1/60th can blur without image stabilization.
