settings on my camera are not readable!

in my cameras settings everything is just little squares and lines...something has obviously happened to my camera but im not sure on what! my friend said it could be a problem with the lcd screen and a connection problem or something...does anybody have any advise on what this could be and how i could fix it?
i took it into a camera shop but it will cost $65 to send away and then another cost on top of that if they can fix it...and seeing as this is an old camera its not really worth it, im just wondering if maybe i can fix this problem myself?
    thanks!

What kind of camera do you have? Have you tried removing the batteries and then putting them back in?

Batteries can cause all sorts of strange problems - try pulling them out and leaving it overnight. The next day, put new batteries in (use the old ones only if you can test to see if they're still OK).

You shouldn't have to pay $65 just to send it back. Check directly with the camera manufactuerer to see what they say about the repair. There are other places too, like keh.com.

Never heard of DSE. If you have access to another camera, can you post a picture of it and the box? Maybe we can figure out what it is from that.

It looks to me like it news to go to the repair shop. The zebra strip is not lined up with the contracts which will make it all fussy or the LCD driver IC has gone south. If you disassamble the camera you can fix the zebra strip, but if it is not the zebra strip connection, it's the LCD driver and even I with a surface mount rework station, would have to send it to the factory repair as you can't purchase that IC unless you order 1,000 pieces or more!
