    recommended reading?

I'm going to be doing some traveling soon, which means a lot of time to do some reading. I'm wondering what are some recommended books on the fundamentals of photography (I'm sure that's actually one of them). Something with good information on the math of photography, lighting techniques, basically all the stuff that applies regardless of digital or film, but also with a good amount of info on digital...histograms, general pp, etc...

Those reviews look good, I may look into that.

I enjoy Scott Kelby's style, and these are very informative:

    Re: recommended reading?

For everything in one, or almost, The National Geographic Guides to Photography are one of the best bang for the buck that can be found. There's numerous versions available with an update at least yearly. There are NatGeo books under the Field Guide Series that are now very much about all things Digital in photography and are worth the time and money.

A photographer/author that I really like for technical reasons is Michael Freeman. (Amazon Link to Freeman Photography Books) There are a few books that pop up in that link that are not about photography but that is obvious! In fact I'd skip the Peterson Book these days on Exposure if you are shooting primarily digital and go for Freeman's Perfect Exposure.

Then one of the other Professionals Guides or Handbooks are a possibility from a variety of authors or sources that cover a bit of everything.

Lighting books are all about presentation and subject unless you are going to take a seminar or class and use a 'standard' design set for how to set up or light varieties of subjects. There are a couple of good basic Lighting books from AMP publishers in paperback that are a start. One consideration is that a number of Commercial/Professional guides are becoming available in an e-book format (Kindle, Nook, iphone, Droid, etc) and that's handy to have when out working in the field and you want to reference something!

    Questions??
