Zoom lens stuck - Samsung Digimax 240

Hi, I have a Samsung Digimax 240; I've had it since November but started using it regularly about 2 weeks ago. The zoom lens seems to be stuck, I turn the camera on and the zoom goes out a little and then it starts beeping like crazy and turns itself off. God knows where I put the warranty card so that's not an option. Is this a serious problem? Does it happen often with these cameras? Approximately how much would it cost to fix it? Any ideas, answers, lemme know. Thanks in advance!

Can we assume that you have tried the obvious - a new (or recharged) battery?

if a FRESH battery doesn't solve..... a repair in NYC area on digi's are about $150++
