suggestions for zoom lens purchase plz

Hey

I am currently looking for a zoom lens for my nikon D70. I will be using it mostly for sports shots and some nature pictures as well. but need a few lens suggestions to get my research and hunting under way.

i have found some decent prices on some 300mm lens but still want some input from you guys out there with all the experience ;)

not looking to spend crazy amounts of money on top of the line equipment, but wont cheap out either... and i dont trust used equipment (bad experiences lately)

80-200f2.8D..........

that would be a GREAT lens for all around use with a 1.4 and a 2x TC

a 300f4 prime would be the best quality, but some of the 70-300 zooms rendor some NICE images too.

I have very little knowledge of the 70/75- 300 lenses, but try this question in the DSLR forum where fellow d70 shooter lurk ;)

i SHOOT BASKET BALL AT Madison Square garden and use a Nikon 70-200 /2.8 picutres are great. I also purchased a 1X4 teleconverter for extra effects. The 2.8 is great espeicialy if you can't use a flash at certain sports events.
