Paint Shop Pro 9 wont read RAW files

I have just bought Paint Shop Pro 9 which is supposed to read Canon RAW files. However it wont read my Canon PowerShot Pro 1 RAW files and in the product help files its not one of the cameras included - did not find this out until I got the product.

    Anyone solved this problem yet?

Jasc does say that is supports some major camera RAW formats. That's not very inclusive. I remember seeing a list at one time and it was less than a dozen cameras. Your best bet for free is to use the Canon software to convert the raw and then use the TIFFs in PSP.

If you do lots of raw work and need a workflow, look into one of the apps that are especically designed to convert raw images.

    Thanks,

I logged a call with Jasc and all I got was a sales pitch as a response - Now sent a response asking for dates. At the moment I use the Canon software that comes with the camera.

What are these other products you talk of and what do you mean by workflow?

There are several products on the market that are designed to let you manipulate and convert raw images.

Right now, I use BreezeBrowser. This does much more than handle raw images and might be more than you need. PhotoShop CS and Elements has a raw module. I don't know if the raw converter for PS is in the form of a plug-in. If it is, PaintShop Pro might be able to use it. Another choice is Bibble.

IMHO, the best one on the market is Capture One. Unfortunately, their business practices are very suspect and border on criminal. I've given up on them completely regardless of the quality of the product. If you choose this one, be prepared for constant money grabs, broken promises about upgrades, and being charged for items that are never delivered. Don't ever expect any response from the company. I sound bitter, don't I?

Workflow is a general term that applies to the process of moving something from start to finish. In photography, it applies to the initial raw image to the final process. This may involve scanners, digital cameras, monitors, imaging programs, maybe CMYK processing, printing, etc. It can be as complex or as simple as you need. Most amateurs have a source (e.g., digital camera), a series of actions in software using a calibrated monitor, and printing the result on a calibrated printer or through a lab service.

    Michael,

Although I have to agree about the business practices of Capture One, yes they do money grabs and upgrade people inconviently, they are still the best RAW conversion software out there, wouldn't you agree.

Hope fully they will get their act together now and move on from the current dramas, everyone (Widnows wise that is), are waiting the release of Version 3.6 to see if that has been accomplished.

I have been in touch with Phase One and have had replies from them, don't know why you haven't, but with all the bitching and complaints that have been happening, I could understand if they maybe hadn't replied to several more hundreds of people as well, not saying yours was a bitching complaint but more than likely was. Most other peoples were, mine included.

I will stick with Capture One, moving to PRO version as part of placation on thier part until around 2006 and then hopefully there will be better more affordable things on the market or Capture One Phase One company have sorted out their priorities to their customers a bit better than recently.

    Roger Reading

I agree with Michael that something like Bibble, or even Breezebrowser might suit your needs as well.

Although the Capture One LE verison at $99 with all camera supports (that is subjective by the way) is nothing to sneeze at either.

Believe me, I was tempted to bitch. I didn't because I know from experience it just makes matters worse.

I bit the bullet and ordered the "upgrade" for my C1 Rebel version. I paid them with my credit card. The first thing they did was deactivate the old version. Fine. I go to download the new version and their download fails. I try it again, again a failure, a third time... You get the idea.

I expect when a company takes my money I get something in return. I didn't even get a form-letter reply.

Yes, it is a fantastic product. But they have messed with users too many times with big promises which are never kept. If the fire hurts, I don't keep sticking my hand in it! By discontinuing a product, they believe they can get out of honoring their contracts. If I had the time, I'd contact the state AG to see what is going on. Hmmm, maybe I will make the time.

    Michael,

Before you finally give up, contact Michael Tapes at info@RawWorkFlow.com and tell him what happened. You might find that the issue can be resolved quite easily with his help.

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9 wont read RAW files

    Thanks for all the advice.

At the moment I convert into JPEG with very little compression - I will now try TIFF and see what the difference is.

The Canon software with the camera has a load of options - not sure which are useful and which could help so need to play with them I guess.

So Plan - play with what I have and see what else I need before spending more money and keep calling JASC for the Pro 1 RAW support to see if its useful.
