old flash on 20D?

Does anyone know if I'll have a problem using an old Canon 188A Speedlite on my new Canon 20D? I want to use that flash until I'm ready to plop cash on the 550ex or 580ex...

Two things I can think of:

First, and most important - check the sync voltage. Check both the manual for the camera and for the flash. Make sure the camera can handle whatever voltage that the flash syncs at - if it can't, you could fry it. It's probably not a concern with a small flash, but better to be safe. This wouldn't be a warranty repair!

Second, it'll may only work in Auto mode which has no TTL function. Exposure isn't too bad once you get the hang of it, but the latest/greatest may be a little more accurate.

I shoot with both a Canon 20-D and an Olympus E-20N. My flash of preference is a Metz 45CT-4. With the Olympus, the flash works well with no damage to the camera's circuitry. WIth the Canon, I have to use a Synch/Regulator fitted on the hotshoe. The unit I use is made by Weins and is available for about $115.00 CDN. It acts like a fusebox and (in theory) protects the 20-D from power surges.
