    Re: Nikon Teleconverter

Not every Nikon TC is compatible with every Nikon lens - check the one you have (TC14__) to see. The reason they do this (as far as I understand) is to get as much sharpness as possible out of the lens + TC combination, unlike generic TC's. So it's not a bad thing, but you do have to have the right one.

Another thing - a 70-300 will usually be f5.6 at the long end. That aperture is at the limit of reliable autofocusing. A 1.4x TC will effectively lose one stop so it's an f8 lens and you may have problems with it. If your 80-200 is an f2.8 lens, you're obviously OK at f4.

    Re: Nikon Teleconverter

And the higher end TCs like Nikon's put part of the teleconverter *in* to the rear of the lens. Therefore, some lenses whose rear tube isn't large enough or whose rear elements are too close to the TC front element will be incompatible or risk collision of expensive glass surfaces.

If your 80-200 is a non-AFS f/2.8 version, then it is because Nikon has designed their TCs to only work with AF-S or AF-I lenses since they lack a mechanical autofocus coupling. It is possible to modify them to work without the extra tab from the mount of those lenses, at the cost of your warranty and possibly resale value, not to mention an increased chance of putting on an incompatible lens that could be damaged by mounting the TC. You will additionally gain compatibility with appropriate third party lenses, however.
