Macro & Extension Tube combination?

I am currently using the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM lens and am looking into the possibility of using an EF 25 Extension Tube together with this lens.

Can anyone provide any comment on whether or not this really does provide additional capabilities by reducing the focussing distance of the lens or does the macro lens and extension tube combination lead to s loss in quality of what is an extremely sharp lens?

The extension tube has no glass so there is no change in the lens. The extension tube will allow you to get closer than the 1:1 the lens provides. Be aware that the DOF will be extremely limited and you'll have to be extra careful with the (manual) focus. Obviously, a big sturdy tripod should be used as well.
