    little help

thanks for looking. I recently bought a D70 and am wondering why when I mount my Tok 400 5.6 atx the aperture seems fixed on f6 when using the program setting. No manual available. Apertute is locked in on the lens at f32 as prescribed. Aperture will change in the camera when using other shooting modes. Is it purposely designed to do so in order to achieve higher shutter speeds with a tele?
    Thanks for any help.

I doubt that because the camera doesn't have any way of knowing what the focal length of the lens is. What kind of conditions did you try it in? Try a bright sunny day and turn the ISO up to 400 or 800 and see if it still does it. Obviously you might not want to shoot this way, but it would be a good test to see if the aperture changes.

I think there may be two different program modes though - some Nikons have one that gives you a higher shutter speed if that's what you need. Maybe you were using that one and it couldn't open up anything past f5.6 (or f6 as displayed). Check the manual on this.

I've used the lens but probably only on A or M modes but I can't remember any problems with using it this way. A friend had it and sold it - should have bought it, it's a really good lens.

Make sure you have the Auto ISO setting turned off, also check the firmware version it's up to version 2 last time I checked.
