    Question Hot weather/heat & digital

Is heat/hot weather a problem with digital cameras:
    LCD screens
Compact flash & other memory cards, etc.
    Batteries
    Etc?

I have the Rebel (which wouldn't be left in the car). However, I tend to leave the G3 in the car at times.

    Thanks
    Liz

Heat and humidity are the enemies of everything, Liz...

Except, of course, for growing bananas...

Sure, digital gear most definitely has more tolerance to this sort of thing than sensitive film, but I would use the same common sense for both.

Also, more expensive DSLRs, like their film counterparts, are built to withstand more extremes in weather and temperature.

Those silver "thermal" bags (which I always use to store my film in on location), or maybe a decent cooler would be a good bet to keep gear in when it's going to be sitting in a hot environment for any length of time. Go easy on the ice packs, though, as they tend to cause condensation on your stuff...

    Higher temperature = more noise

This is not what Liz is asking but - I just read that the noise produced on a digital sensor doubles every 6-8°C (10-14°F). So if you leave your G3 in the car in the sun and you shoot with it before it has time to cool down, you might get images that are noisier than usual.

    How about that?

    Charles,

Don't know where you read that, but from my experience nothing close tot hat is true. I have heard reports of slight increases in REALLY hot temps, but nothing close to DOUBLING.

I have seen pictures from shoots inside burning buildings, where the camera is almost too hot to hold, and there was no appreciable increase on noise.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

Le Photographe magazine issue April 2004 page 77 section "Courant d'obscurité". It's all in French and very technical. This is the first of 3 articles explaining the technology of sensors, CCD, CMOS, etc.

A few pages before there's an ad for the latest SINARBACK which says they've banished all unnecessary components (screen, processor, etc) from the back itself to avoid heat and vibration. There must be something in it.
