So far as the AA batteries - that will be hard to get away from in this price bracket. Best bet will be getting the AA NiMH rechargeables. Wal-Mart has a package that features a Charger with both house and car plugs, and four batteries, for about $20. Add $10 for four more batteries (always keeping a spare set charged) and you're in business.

Now on a quality camera, meeting the other specs and within price range, my favorite brand Minolta has you well covered.

Click that link, then use the drop-down list of models to check out the models Z-1, Z-2, and Z-3. The prices run about $350, $425, and $500 - available at most larger Wal-Marts.

For a reliable online source for these and many other models, where you can read the specs and order with confidence, I'll recommend B&H in New York. http://bhphotovideo.com

Well the reason why i didnt want AA batteries, is that i had a digital camera that used these and they didnt last at all. Do the Nimh AA batteries last alot longer than just regular batteries? And my friend had a canon camera with a battery that wasnt AA, but it lasted around 70 shots, and to recharge it he just plugged in his camera into the power source. I wanted something like that. Thxs for the reply

Quite understandable. The newer NiMH AA's do pack more juice than disposables. But the rechargeables will also slowly lose charge 'on the shelf', so it's important to charge them up freshly before a big shoot. And you NEVER go shooting without a spare set of batteries.

That charger kit from Walmart that I mentioned will handle this quite nicely. It'll recharge a set of four from 'flat dead' in about two hours - less if they're partially charged.
