    Cleaning my DSLR

Hi guys...i have had this Nikon D50 for about 2 months now and i noticed that i have this tiny black spot when im taking pictures on the right side.
I thought....easy clean right? Its probably only a spec of dust.
I take off the lens and i notice that its on the Mirror thing in my DSLR Camera, it wont come off. :mad2: Seems to be stuck there good, maybe hardened? Did not remember being there when i first bought it.
I didn't scratch it or force it out, because im not too sure on how sensitive that mirror piece is. Now there is a tiny black smudge on every picture i take, hard to tell but its there.
What can i do to take that off? any suggestions? thanks..

It sounds like you've got a piece of dust on the sensor of your camera. I don't know how much you know about D-SLRs, but the sensor is behind the mirror that you see. When you take a picture, the mirror flips up and lets the light hit the sensor. If you've got dust on it, then you'll need to get a blower or something and blow it off. Here is a good thread with info about cleaning your sensor.

Also, to get the dust off of the mirror, get a lens cleaning brush and that should work to get the dust off the mirror.

Look in the manual for mirror lock up. With fully charged batteries, lock up the mirror and clean the sensor. Be carefull as you do not want to blow anything between the IR filter and the senser or up into the view finder.

i dont think there is dust where my filter is....there is an actual water drop looking thing on the mirror itself and it will not come off with blowing or dusting. Its pretty much stuck on the mirror. I havent tried to force it out because i dont know how sensitive the mirror is...
    what shall i do?

Under the mirror at the focual point of the lense is the digital image senser. The digital image senser is what genrates the image. Dust, or water drop(s) out line(s), on the mirror will not show up in the image file! and will not show up in the veiw finder but may reduce the brightness in the view finder only. When you take a photo the mirror raises up out of the way, and Dust, Horse Hair, and water drops on the infurred filter mounted on the image senser will so up in the image files.

Does anyone have a link on the best way to clean sensor?

    Re: Cleaning my DSLR

The mirror is very fragile and will scratch easily - don't touch it. I scratched one by brushing dust off of it years ago and now only use a blower bulb like this one.

Check the owner's manual for info about cleaning. I know my Fuji has to have the AC adapter used or it can't be put into cleaning mode. The reason is if the batteries go dead, the shutter will close and the mirror will come down as you're trying to clean the sensor. You'll probably damage both of them, and it might be cheaper to replace the camera than repair it.

I'd advise the same for the sensor as the mirror - put the camera in cleaning mode and try to blow the dust off with the same blower bulb. This has worked for me for the 2-1/2 years I've had mine. It might take a couple of tries, but I've never had to use anything that actually touched the sensor.
