Check the owner's manual for info about cleaning. I know my Fuji has to have the AC adapter used or it can't be put into cleaning mode. The reason is if the batteries go dead, the shutter will close and the mirror will come down as you're trying to clean the sensor. You'll probably damage both of them, and it might be cheaper to replace the camera than repair it.

I'd advise the same for the sensor as the mirror - put the camera in cleaning mode and try to blow the dust off with the same blower bulb. This has worked for me for the 2-1/2 years I've had mine. It might take a couple of tries, but I've never had to use anything that actually touched the sensor.
