Canon 580ex and 420ex

I have a Canon 420ex speedlight that I use with a Rebel 2000. I'm thinking about getting a 580ex. Will the 420ex slave with the 580ex? Will all of this gear work the same if I upgrade to a 20D?

That's a definite yes. You can use the 580 as a master to fire off the 420 as a slave.

100% completely. The 20D might even give you an extra option or two (Like rear shutter sync with the 420EX as I'm not sure if the rebel can do that).
