Raw lacking saturation

Attached are two photos taken with my digital rebel, the first in .jpg the second in raw. Both images are untouched apart from resizing and converstion from raw to tif to jpg in photoshop 8.

I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem but I get the following error when opening a raw file in photoshop:



In order to save as .jpg after this I have to convert to 8 bit color from 16 bit. Saturation does not change in the converstion.

These two test shots do not show the difference as dramitcally as some of my other shots have. You can still see a difference though.

I'm not intent on figuring this out as I'm ordering a 20D on Saturday but it would be nice to know if someone know the anwser without doing any serious research.

jpeg files are adjusted according to the settings inside the camera. The RAW images are not touched in camera and are intended to be adjusted by using external software like photoshop or capture one DSLR RAW converting software, Breezebrowser or Bibble, then using photoshop (or something else) you make the adjustments to suit what you want to get the best image you can through experimenting with exposure correction, colour correction, white balancing, levels etc.

Exactly, RAW images are designed for adjustments to saturation/contrast/white balance, etc where jpegs set all of that at time of capture.

The error message is happening because you're shooting RAW in the Adobe RGB color space and Photoshop is currently set up for sRGB. Change one or the other so that the changes you make in Photoshop are shown correctly. Be careful if you send it out for printing - many labs only work in sRGB.

Gotcha. I think I'm going to have to work with it a for a while to get it right. Anytime I've tried adjusting raw photos they have ended up looking worse than the jpg's.

In the top menu bar of ps, go to EDIT>COLOR SETTINGS. Under "Working Space, RGB:" select "Adobe RGB" from the pulldown...
