    Err 99 Help.......

I have the Rebel XT. I recently purchased the Canon 35mm/f2.0 lens. The 2nd time I used it I got the Err99 message. When I turned it off, it went away, but then came back. So far it's the only lens it's done it on.

I know what it means - Err99 usually appears when the lens doesn't work with the camera; however, I've read some reviews that the XT has an Err99 problem.

Any experience/advice/thoughts? I hope it's not a camera problem, obviously.

    Battery

    Liz-
Congratulations on the new lens. I'd love to have that one!

Whenever I've seen the Error 99, I always remove the battery as well as turning the camera on and off. Not sure if it really makes a difference. But it's worth a try.

I'm going to move your post to the Digital SLR forum. I think you might get more informed answers there.

I was getting this a lot at a wedding about 2 years ago with my two 10D's. Really weird to have happened to both cameras, and it was happening only with my 28-70 and 70-200 L zooms (the ones I use the most). I noticed it went away after I removed and re-attached the lenses several times. Later I cleaned all my lens electrical contacts (I mean really cleaned and scrubbed them) and the optics as I hadn't cleaned them for a while. Might just be the contacts on the new 35mm f2 haven't been worn enough to get a good contact or have a film of oil on them. Clean the contacts with an eraser both on the camera and the lens and see if that helps,.

Thank you for the suggestion. I did notice that the lens is extremely tight - almost difficult to attach it's so tight.

Hmmm....maybe the lens isn't rotated all the way for proper alignment of the contacts? Probably not, but just a thought. Maybe you could e-mail Canon USA and see if they have a solution.
