The first step is to attempt getting help from the manufacturer. Even if the camera is out of warranty, they can sometimes help if there is a known manufacturing defect. You can do a little research on the problem online, if many people suffer from the same issue, you may be able to put more pressure on the manufacturer, because you have proof it's a manufacturing defect. Otherwise, I agree that an independent digital camera repair shop can be a good solution if you are out of warranty and there is physical or cosmetic damage to the camera.
