I did that and managed to make the filter ring the right shape with careful use of pliers, once I'd done that then it unscrewed.
If you're not happy with DIY then I'd take it to a local camera shop, if you've got one.

The first step is to attempt getting help from the manufacturer. Even if the camera is out of warranty, they can sometimes help if there is a known manufacturing defect. You can do a little research on the problem online, if many people suffer from the same issue, you may be able to put more pressure on the manufacturer, because you have proof it's a manufacturing defect. Otherwise, I agree that an independent digital camera repair shop can be a good solution if you are out of warranty and there is physical or cosmetic damage to the camera.

Dude the camera was dropped, unless the body is lubricated with butter at the factory this is not a manufacturing defect.

To the OP, This is a fairly common thing to have happen. I would suggest going to a repair shop as you may be able to recover the original threads on the camera so that you can continue to use filters. If your skilled enough you can do this the DIY way too, but a shop will have more expertise.

If DIY, depending on the level of damage you may be able to use a filter wrench and I've even heard people say that a potato cut in half will work as well, but I wouldn't recommend that route.
