    Over-exposed 3200x2400 shots

    Hello, People.

    My digital camera: Olympus C740

My intent: to set the resolution (pixel size) as high as possible so that, when I crop a picture and print the result as an 8x10, I get as sharp an image as possible.

What I have done: I selected the following record mode: SHQ>Enlarge Size (3200x2400 pixels)

    My questions:

    1. Most important. When I use this mode, the pictures are terribly over-exposed. How do I compensate for this? What am I missing? I noticed in one product review that the 3200x2400 resolution is done by interpolation, not directly. Does this have anything to do with it?

    2. Less important. The 3200x2400 works in all still modes except for AUTO. Is this correct?

    Thanks,

    Barry

this is a very camera specific question.. i probably shouldnt attempt an answer but the camera is only a 3.2 mega pixel camera.. u cant really get something for nothing in my opinion.. starting off with only 3 mega pixels and 10x optical is supposed to get u close enough so u do not have to crop.. whatever u do cropping and enlaging is gonna degrade the image quality at larger print sizes too much.. uncropped 3 mega pixel images are okay up to 8 x 10 but i dont think cropped ones would be..

in camera interpolating a 3 mega pixel image up to 3200x2400 is a bit like digital zoom in my oppinion.. a waste of time.. i think letting the camera use its native setting to take and store its pics.. then useing after market software to crop and play with any images that need it afterwards is probably a better idea..

still i have to admit i do not own a camera like yours so i would defer any comment to anyone that does and knows better,,

i cant see any logical reason why this in camera messing about would over expose an image thow to be honest..

i just checked my c750 to see if it did that but it doesn't. This may be a problem just on your camera, or it could have been a glitch in the c740's. It seems odd though. Like trog said, theres no real logical explanation for what is happening. Interpolation shouldn't cause it to be really overexposed.

Hi, Trog. Thanks for your reply. I kind of figured that the interpolation up to 3200x2400 was a lot of hogwash. And that makes the over-exposure problem a moot point; I'll just re-set back to regular SHQ, 2048x1536.

Your comments also reinforce my yen to upgrade to a 8-10 megapixal camera. Boy Toy and all that. Just waiting for the prices to drop.

    Thanks again,
    Barry

Hi, livin. Thanks for the reply. See my answer to Trog's post. Ahm a'headin' back to the ole 2048x1536 corral. I'll just have to live with it until I can afford a 10 meggy.
