First off, I've owned the camera for 2 years but have barely used it. It's never been dropped or damaged in any way.
I took this camera to work the other day to take company photos. I noticed a fuzzy white vertical line develop on the viewing screen after the camera had been on a couple minutes. When I turned it off, it went away. But as the camera was on it began to develop the same thing, starting with a fuzzy area at the top that moved down. When I put my hand over the lens to block out all light, this white area remains visible. This will go away completely once I turn the camera off but it will start all over again the next time. This white area DOES show up on images (otherwise I wouldn't care). If I switch the camera to the playback position (ie so I can view pictures I've already taken), I can see images that I took when I first turned it on which don't have this problem just fine. So this is not a screen issue. It has also had some flickering on the screen, similar to image you might get on a tv if you bump the antenna. This only happens right after I turn it on.
Here are some sample photos showing the progression of the white, about 60 seconds after I turn it on. Nevermind the fact that the picture quality (the grainy lines) is horrible compared to what it used to be.
Anybody know what would cause this and if there's anything that can be done short of sending it to Canon?
