expert's advice: is this noise normal??

    Hello to all,
I am new to the forum and plan on coming back here more often because i may need advice and help with my projects as well as to check out many other members' works.

I am currently using a Canon g6 and with the past few shots i've taken lately, i have had this problem with grainy-like noise on area that is usually dark or shadowed. I need to know if this is normal? if not then how would i prevent it? The image shown was cropped and minimized by 20% for easy viewing.

    Thanks for help,
    Matt

Well, I don't really see a whole lot of noise in this crop, but noise in shadows is definitely normal, especially with the smaller sensors in cameras like the G6. Even my D70 has noise in the shadows. The easiest solution is to use fill flash whenever you can to just get rid of the shadows altogether.

I don't know how to put this, but...I'm kind of a big deal...People know me.

This is normal. The best thing you can do to help prevent noise is to make sure you use the lowest ISO possible on your camera. I believe on the G6 that's going to be 50 ISO.

Thanks, i did shoot at ISO 50 but i read that the canon G6 performing at ISO 50 is actually at ISO 100.

I appreciate the replies, i was upset when i saw what happened but after comparing to many other images taken from the G6, i thought it may be normal.

    Thanks a lot guys,
    Matt

    i just realized something else...

I sent the images to my other computer, the noise was not visible. I think it may be my monitor since i am using a 12.1" widescreen Dell laptop. My other monitor is a 19" and the noise in the shadow was not even there. Maybe that's why you guys don't see much noise, its my monitor??...

i just downloaded your image and enlarged it somewhat..and cant really see the "noise" so it must be your monitor..

after all.. u can only see what your monitor shows u..

If it's the same 12.1 inch Dell that I sold to my girlfriend, then the calibration out of the box is HORRIBLE. Mine was way off. I suggest you find someone with a hardware calibrator or at the very least run Adobe Gamma if you have PS installed.

    Hey Sebastian,
where can i get the Adobe Gamma update or driver or whatever it is?
I hope you're not talking about C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe ? Cause i deleted it, it was one of those adware stuff.

    Please let me know,

    Thanks a lot,
    Matt
