You may want to check how your LCD Display is set up. If you have the info turned on, the number of remaining shots will be in the lower right corner of the LCD. A 2GB card in my SD1000 will hold 641 images at the highest settings.

As for the battery indicator, you will get a warning when it is getting low, bu there is no battery level indicator otherwise.
