There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

I'd personally get the Olympus 5060z. Fast and sharp.

    Good eye

You take nice pictures - very nice. When I saw that list of links I was sort of scared. But then I started looking and I was glad I did. You have a good eye and you were doing very well with the camera you had. But I understand about wanting something faster and with more resolution. Those things definitely help - especially if you have kids and want to take high quality photos to sell.

Honestly, there are lots of good cameras out there right now. And your money puts you right in the sweet spot as far as full-featured compact digital cameras go. Maury loves his Olympus 5060 and it's definitely a good choice. Really, almost any 4 or 5 megapixel camera is going to have very good image quality now. The compacts won't be as good as the Digital Rebel, but they're really good - especially compared to your CD Mavica. Shutter-lag is the main problem with compacts and that's what you're going to have to concentrate on. Definitely try to test out cameras to find out for yourself what's fast and what isn't. Recently, a lot of companies have been concentrating on making their cameras faster. Canon came out with their Digic processor a year or so ago and that sped up their cameras. Olympus, Panasonic, Konica Minolta, Casio, and Kyocera (to name a few) have also started using faster procesors. Some of those cameras may not be available yet. But reducing shutter-lag is currently a high priority with major camera manufacturers.

Have you looked at the reviews on this site? I recommend looking at the 4-5 megapixel camera reviews and sorting by rating and number of reviews to see what is most popular. Also, if you look at the PCPhotoREVIEW.com Home page you'll find a list of the top ten most popular cameras here. That should help, too. And since the annual PMA tradeshow just happened, you should also look at the 2004 PMA show coverage that's been posted to see if there's anything new you'd like to wait for. I don't usually tell people to wait. But with the amount of money you have and the new stuff that was announced, it might be worthwhile for you to wait a few weeks for the new Olympus, Kyocera, and Konica Minolta stuff to make it to the stores.

I know I didn't give you the exact answers you were looking for, but hopefully I've provided a little more information and some direction. Let us know if you have more specific questions. I know how hard it is to decide on a new camera.

If you're wanting a larger zoom...I use a Tamron 75-300 on my Elan 7 and I'm pretty happy with it for being a cheap lens. I got it for $110 plus shipping off e-bay (flashpoint cameras). I think B&H sells it for around $120.

Since you like taking pics of flowers, another cheap option would be the Tamron 70-300 macro. It's about $20 more than the 75-300, but has a macro switch so you can get closer to the subject and still focus.

Have fun with the DRebel, seems like a great camera.
