Where can I get the best deal on a camera?

I looked on Craigslist and most people seem to be asking a lot for used cameras. I'm looking for a Nikon D3100 if that makes any difference.

I assume you are looking for a used camera. Whether local or on line I find that most used cameras are way over priced relative to the risks associated with used. In the new market realm I have found better deals locally than on line. Our local retailers are very competitive. I regularly see current used cameras selling for more money on ebay than I can buy them here for with warranty and local dealer service.

In my city dealers instantly act on cheap listings on our Craigslist equivalent. I recently listed two lenses on our local site and had a half dozen instant responses. Some dealers have their computers set up for auto search. Their computers are tied into their blackberries. Some dealers even have auto response programs as well . I have had several incidents in which I was the first person to see a new ad within seconds of it being posted. Our local buy and sell records viewers so I know I was the first viewer. I assume I lost the opportunities to buyers with automated response systems. High tech makes it very difficult for the average guy to get a sweet underpriced deal in our local used market.

Remember that finding the lowest price and getting the best deal are two totally different things. Often you will find very low prices on items only to find out that it is a bait and switch dealer or one that has grey market products that will not be covered by warranty from the manufacturer. This pertains to mostly new purchases but I just want to warn you to really check out the seller BEFORE purchasing anything. I have gotten some really good deals on lenses and cameras off of e-bay, but you need to check out the ratings of each seller. Another good piece of advice is to not get in a hurry but to take your time in the search for what you want. If it isn't there or seem to be right today, just wait a few days and it will be, Jeff

I know this thread is old but I am going to jump in anyway. If you are looking for good used equipment in my opinion KEH out of Marietta, GA is the only place to shop. Their prices are very reasonable and their grading system is the best. Give them a try.
