just got a question

i have a digital rebel 300D, which i may be able to sell for a good price ($600 - $700 US with lense /512 card and 1 battery), now for my rebel i bought the battery addon piece to hold 2 batteries - does anyone know if this will fit in the new rebel XT ?


Also, i assume all lense the rebel could take the new Xt can take as well ?


Upon checking Canon's web site, what are the major differnce between these camera and is the $200 price differnce between the 2, being new, worth it or ?

I just did a quick check on the Canon's website, and from what I can gather, the batter grip is not interchangable. The original DRebel takes the BG-E1, the XT takes the BG-E3. Under compatibility, the DRebel is the only camera listed under the BG-E1, and the XT is the only one listed under the BG-E3. I don't think you can even use the same batteries from your DRebel in the XT. The DRebel uses the BP-511 battery and the XT uses the NB-2LH.

As for the lenses, I would assume that what fits on the DRebel will fit on the XT.

From what I have read, one of the major upgrades between the two cameras in the sensor. Not just that it has more megapixels either. I don't remember the specifics off hand, but check out the press release for the XT in the News and Rumors forum on this site. The XT is also a bit lighter than the DRebel, and if I'm not mistaken, the XT has mirror lock up. Don't quote me on the mirror lock up tho. The improved sensor, and the mirror lockup would be well worth the extra $200. I'm sure there are some other upgrades on the XT as well.

argh!! that stinks!!! darn it - i dropped about $2200 US into this camera when i first bought it - most of it was the extras like the battery grip/ extra battery 512 sandisk extreme card and another lense :(

thanks for looking up that info - i did a side to side comparison off canon's site - the major changes seem to be 14 instant pics instead of 4 on the rebel and 8mp over 6.2 - other then that there does not seem to be any major changes.

Well, time to reprice this and see if my friend would still want it with the other items - that is a real bummer :(

Welcome to the world of digital cameras. When I bought my Pentax *istDS I asked myself if I it would get the job done in 5 years, regardless of what came next. Upgrading is always a hit to the wallet, so unless you find yourself in need of extra speed, megapixels, and control, you may want to consider keeping the 300D. It did not become less useful because the XT is out. There is also some talk of improved dynamic range, but that talk has all come from Canon thus far, so I would wait on a decision about the importance or degree of improvement until people who have the camera begin to give feedback.

The big differences appear to be:
more megapixels
smaller size
higher fps rate with a much larger buffer
ability to select your metering mode
mirror lock-up

The last three are all very imporant to me (and the reason that the 300D was never under serious consideration on my quest to purchase a DSLR) but may be rather frivolous to you, or at least not worth the extra cash.

Your lenses and memory card will still work, but the battery has been changed drastically.

i am still an amateur, i wasnt even considering the new model until i came across a bit of money and since i am going to be in the outdoors alot more figured if the upgrade might only cost me say $200/$300 why not :D

tis Camera is dated but still performs excellent, and now i may have a new buyer, down here in Costa Rica u can not get these cameras usuall and the store u do get cameras are so limited and the prices are SO jacked up!

So in might be able to sell my 300D / battery Grip / 512 extreme CF card / bag / cd / stock lense/ extra battery for $1100 US to a club owner i know.

If so i can get the XT with all of the same above items for $1400 US so i spend $300 more, which isnt too bad.

the battery grip from the 300D will NOT fit on the 350/XT. This is due to the 350/XT being a bit smaller than the original digital rebel. all of your lenses will still work, but you will need new batteries too. i dont remember the battery off hand, but its the same ones that go in the s400 and s500 powershot series. i personally am not very thrilled about that, as they are about half the capacity of the BP-511 batteries.... but we'll see. if i were you, i would get a 20D. its well worth the extra couple hundred $$$. performance is greatly improved over the 350/XT rebel, and it has a metal body... which in itself is worth it.

i am going to be selling my rebel 300D for $1100 US to a friend

so that gives me $1100 towards te next one - to get the Xt all spec'd out how i had my rebel will run me about $1500 US

i will check out the 20D, but i dont really want to spend too much more for the camera, considering i am still rather an amateur and most of my pictures are scenery and @ the clubs.

you can get the 20D for $1400-$1500 WITH the 18-55mm lens. why get the rebel when you will just grow out of it? you should seriously consider the 20D, its a much better camera.

Keep one of the BP-511 batteries from your rebel, and youre all set. total price = $1599

so for a hundred bucks more you get a MUCH better camera. who cares if youre an amateur? its worth it!

i must say i do like the looks of the rebel XT ;)

comparing them side by side on canon they have some nice differences - any chance you could point out the significant ones?

i just like to make sure i did not miss anything.


As it also turns out i may be selling a spare computer for $800 US :D so now my budget just raised :D

$1,709.85 for the 20d includes battery grip + 1g CF II card and sipping, not too bad - an extra $300 above what i was considering buying.

very good point. i would say the 20D is well worth the extra $300. a few things i can point out are:
1.) although the 20D is a bit larger and heavier (a few oz.... im not sure exactly how much) it is much more durable, due to the magnesium-alloy body.
2.) it uses CF cards (the XT uses SD cards, so you would have to get a new card reader as well as new cards)
3.) more custom functions and processing parameters. the 20D's menu is also very nice. everything is categorized nicely on a single-page menu, that is very easy to navigate.
4.) the 20D uses the same batteries as the old digital rebel, and they are about twice the capacity of the XT's batteries.
5.) 5 frames per second for 23 frames, as opposed to 2.5 (or 3?) for 14 frames. that 23 frame buffer is so nice!!!

i cant think of any more at the moment, but ill make sure and edit this post when i do!
i love my 20D, and i honestly think you will be quite happy with it. im not saying the XT is a bad camera, and i havent used one, but im just saying i think you will grow out of it, as i grew out of my digital rebel within a year!

seems prices for the XT have now dropped sub $1000 in some places - is the now $500 or so difference make the D20 still worh it, jeje

i hate spending large sums of money @ once, always seems so hard! until i say yes to that first piece!

that price is witha 600 dollar lens. look for the camera with the 18-55mm EF-S USM lens. pay attention to those packages!

with the new USM 18-55 lens it goes for $1,369 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=359446&is=REG) but it isnt necessary to have that lens. i recommend getting the body only and using whatever lenses you already have. if you dont have lenses, get the kit with the 18-55mm lens, and its still a decent setup.

for a card i have a 1g CF sandis ultra II - myuncles has it right now but he will have to ship t down to me :D - that should do for a D20 yes ?

yeah, i use sandisk ultra II cards for my 20D. i have about 5 of them. they work great, and are plenty fast. enjoy!

My friend bought the XT and I didn't like it - it feels cheap and not sturdy and I didn't like how it felt in my hands- maybe it's just that i'm used to the nice solid feel of my 300D. The other prob I have with it is that it won't work with my virtual tour software because it doesn't go low enough in megapixels.

a friend got the XT with the metal body,but it does feel, "light" but i know i am used to my rebel with the battery grip on it 24/7 - i like the extrat weight and grip.

Well i will be getting my 20D in october between the 14th - 24th when i am in toronto - checking some sites out i now see there ios a 20D A revision - any quick thoughts on this one or should i just stick with the 20D normal one?

the 5D would of been nice if i had $4500 canadian..lol

Designed especially for photographers who want to capture galaxies far, far away the EOS 20Da camera delivers outstanding photos of the night sky. Most features of the EOS 20Da are shared with the standard EOS 20D camera but several important modifications have been made to optimize the camera’s astrophotography capabilities.

The EOS 20Da yields sharper and higher contrast images of various astronomical phenomena such as diffuse reddish nebulae because of a special, modified low-pass filter that is positioned in front of the EOS 20Da’s 8.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor,. The modification increases the transmission of light at the specific wavelength of 656nm, known as the Hydrogen Alpha line or Ha wavelength, by a factor of 2.5x compared to the standard EOS 20D.

The 20Da makes framing the image easier with a magnified live view mode on the 1.8” LCD monitor. This is not possible with traditional digital SLRs, but the 20Da allows the photographer to lockup the mirror and open the shutter at night to view subjects before the image is captured. The central portion of the image is magnified by 5x or 10x to ensure sharp focus. The live view mode can also be used with a TV monitor connected to the camera’s video out terminal.

For the long exposures required in astrophotography, the EOS 20Da features enhanced noise reduction incorporating an optimized CMOS control system. A custom function is also available for noise reduction allowing the user to achieve maximum image quality at ISO settings from 50-3200.

The EOS 20Da can be connected to a telescope using a standard, widely available T-mount, thus enabling incredible images of distant subjects that are normally invisible to the naked eye. In addition, the camera is also compatible with over 50 EF and EF-S lenses, including Canon’s renowned Image Stabilizer super-telephoto lenses. Conventional photography is also possible by mounting an infrared filter on the lens.

not really worth the extra money unless you are REALLY into astro-photography... and definitely not worth getting for normal photography
