Howdy all,

Another pic to be critiqued. I must admit, night shooting with my little Fuji S5100 was tough, but I managed to pull off some half decent (I hope) shots. This is my favourite and I was just wondering what you all thought of it!

Thanks,

Jared

Hi jared,

Technically, I think you pulled of this shot just fine. Technical issues are always important to get taken care of and understood and I think you've done that here. You're probably ready to get more creative with night lighting at this point. There's not a lot in this photo that interests me. Did you have other night time shots in mind? I've always had a thing for them :)

Thanks Trevor. I appreciate the comments. There is one hill around where i live which is about 3 or 4 S-turns. There's a spot I can hike up to take picks and hopefully get something neat from up there. Unfortunaetly, it's not the busiest road around here and pretty bad in the winter, but something to remember for sure.

Thanks again,
Jared

What time of day (er...night) was it? Maybe a little earlier and you could better balance the sky with the lights, and not blow them out...But if this was the specific look you were going for, then it's good...I always like red and white taillight and headlight streaks...

I believe on the data I had with this pic it was around 7:30ish PM. I do agree, having almost a sunset/a little sunlight to add some color. The idea was just kinda a spur of the moment thing, hoping to capture something decent. And who doesn't like the streaking red and white tail lights?!?!

Thanks downByfive,

Jared

Hey, I've done some night shooting with my Fuji S5000 (similar model). It's tough but I think I could get some good results.

I agree with all the comments above; basically I think you need more of a subject. My favourite night image I've taken with my S5000 is the one below:

Bridge of Sighs (http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/images/chinde/2004/10/17/bridge.jpg)

Keep trying!

Cheers,
Chris

I agree with Trevor. Not alot in the shot that is interesting. But like he also said I think you achieved
what you were technically trying to achieve. Looking forward to seeing the S-turn shot from the hill.

Night photo ain't easy (to say the least). In this case, you did not have a brightly lit scene and you had prettily much to deal with the street lights and the inside lights of the front building. As a result, the pic is very contrasted (pitch black sky and almost burn out highlights).

If you have the opportunity to reshoot this scene, I would suggest you to try an earlier time to give a hint of color in the sky.

I would also suggest you to use a much lower shutter speed in order to avoid having dashed trail lights. Measuring how long a car takes to go from one side to the other can give you a rough idea of your shutter speed.

I have the feeling also that the overall pic is a bit soft. However, it could be due to the JPEG conversion for the web. If your original is also a bit soft, I would advise you to use a sturdy tripod with a trigger release cord. However, if your shutter speed is above 2-5 sec, you can probably deal without the trigger release cord.

While I appreciate the dynamism added by the trail of light, I find this pic a bit flat. To follow up on Trevor's earlier comment, there is no enough going on to keep me hooked.

However, I commend the effort (taking pics during winter nights is not necessarily fun and operating a camera with the mittens on requires practice). I look forward to see more of your night photos.

Please take my comments with a grain of salt. What matters is whether this pic talks to you.

Cheers,

Steph.

Thanks Chris, Scott, and Steph for all your comments.

And Steph you hit it right on the head with the mittens thing:p Dang mittens certainly don't help, but I don't think that was the problem with this shot:D

Thanks again for all the comments,

Jared
