I took this shot yesterday. The weather was pretty crummy but I still made it out to shoot!

Greg, how did you get so close to a black vulture, or is this a crop? Great head position, but a little fill at -1.7ev would have opened up the shadow just enough(IMO)

OH and what are those 2 dots on the edge of the beak :)

Thanks for your suggestion. I spotted this guy on a fence post while driving out to Galveston. He was pretty close to the side of the road and there was a nice big shoulder to pull over on. I took several pictures out the window and he didn’t seem bothered. At that point I got out of the car and slowly started to move towards him. He didn’t seem the slightest bit bothered by me though the mosquitoes were absolutely swarming me. Finally I got so close that this is what filled up the frame on my 20D camera with a 400mm lens and 1.4x TC. I would have been happier if the sky was a little better (it was totally overcast out) but I was pretty happy to get so close to this guy. As far as the exposure is concerned the 20D’s metering actually got fooled by all the black in the frame and overexposed the shot. I had to go in to PS and play around with the curves to get it to what I thought looked good. Maybe I darkened it a bit too much. I will have to play around with it some more.
