What number did your file numbering start at? My first shot was 1101, seems unusual, I'm hoping this thing was not used.

Weird. I called the dealer and this was a fresh shipment, unboxed yesterday. I wil email Canon to make sure.

Mine started at #1 as well. I am suspicious that it might have been used and returned to Canon for fix up of something and has been replaced to original Owner, then repackaged and put back in the system.

Just my thoughts.

Did some research, seems I'm not alone. For some reason some previosuly used cards tend to screw the counters. Found four instances in five minutes of searching, that's good enough for me... :D

That is true. I wanted to be nice to a friend and let her try my Rebel and it did the same. Best format the card on your PC before you put it into the camera.

See, that's the thing. I formatted the card in the camera, not thinking twice about it. Once the card is in the camera, the folder and numbering are set, and formatting in the camera does not reset it if numbering is set on continuous.

Best bet is to reformat the card outside of the camera first.

On a PC it mounts like a disk. But if you don't understand your PC and card very well then don't try it (as you have to decide Fat16 vs. Fat32 depending on your card)

Thanks for the info. I own the Rebel 300D. I assume this is the same with this camera?

If I just continue formatting the card on the camera, I assume it won't do anything to the camera, just mess up the numbers on the card? Am I understanding it correctly?

The camera was not exchanged. The rpeviosuly used card simply set the counter wrong because it was the first card in the camera and it had data on it. Nothing wrong, just unusual firmware behavior, maybe even a bug? Who knows, it's so trivial it doesn't even matter. Don't worry one bit and do whatever you were doing.
