View Full Version : Lilies on the water
cjsoap 08-31-2004, 07:10 PM I have been popping in and out of here lately. Alot of stuff going on in my life, but I did managed to go to the Norton Simon Museum and take a couple of shots of the grounds. Not anything great but would like to know what you think. Thank you for your comments.

Spike 09-01-2004, 02:08 PM I have never seen dark blue / purple water lilies before. How pretty. But I think your first shot lacks a subject. It's a pleasant scene, but there is no dominant element to grab my attention. Since the sky looks rather drab, I think it would have been better to not include it in your composition.
I think the 2nd shot is much better. But try to get even closer to your subject, try to fill the frame more with your subject. In this case the lily and lily bud are still kind of small, you can't see much detail in them.

cjsoap 09-02-2004, 04:59 AM Hi Spike,
You are right about not having a subject, generally I pay more attention to that, but I guess was more intriqued with the purple lilies and the surroundings. As for the white ones, that was as close as I could get with the digital camera, and I agree about the lack of detail. I will pay more attention. :) Thank you for your comments,

cjsoap 09-02-2004, 04:06 PM Thanks Penny,
I actually have another shot with the statue as the subject and you can't see the sky :) with the lilies in the foreground. I hadn't been to the Norton for quite a while. It was really nice. I do have some photo from the Getty as well. Will see what I come up with.
Thank you for suggestions.

I like #2 best. The other has so much, it's hard for me to focus anywhere. Where is the Norton Simon museum?
cjsoap 09-02-2004, 05:54 PM Hi Lava
The Norton Simon is in Pasadena CA. Los Angeles area. It's on the Rose Parade route.
It's a nice museum, a little small compared to some, but has a pretty good collection, alot of Degas, and other Impressionists, beautiful grounds, alot of statues.

My husband took me to the Norton Simon. He grew up near Pasadena. I loved it there and want to go back! I still remember one painting I saw there, I don't think it was by anyone super famous, but the way this painter painted the red velvet cloak on Cleopatra just had me spellbound.
cjsoap 09-02-2004, 07:21 PM Hi Kelly
It really is a nice area, there are a few nice places in between all the concrete of the city. Come on down and we'll all go! Have you ever been to the Metropolitan in New York? Talk about concrete. What a place that is.

I have to agree with the others that the sky has to go an would take out the plain back of the bulding as well. I think there is a pretty nice picture left in there though. I like the reflections of statue and trees. I think Monet might have set up an easel here.
cjsoap 09-03-2004, 05:27 PM Thanks Chunk,
It does look better, and your right it would be a good place for an easel, but now there is no sky :D

You have half a pond full of sky. :)
cjsoap 09-04-2004, 06:46 PM :) I could turn it upside down, clone out half the statue and call it
Lilies in the Sky :)
