View Full Version : Canon 50mm f1.8 II
motlive 04-01-2008, 11:49 AM Just got the Canon 50mm f1.8 II as I was loosing motivation in photography due to the standard 18-55mm lens not producing some of the shots I was looking for.
Very impressed with it so far, only fault is as many report, the focusing being a little noisy, but cameras dont record sound s its ok :)
Highly recommend the lens, only £80 (i know its cheaper other places) so very happy with it.

Congratulations on your new lens - one of the best less expensive lenses out there. If you haven't checked out the 50mm/f1.8 thread on Viewfinder - check it out - and add some of your shots.
Enjoy! It's always a great feeling to get a new lens!

Hey Liz,
I broke down and bough one of them also. It's quite a nice little lens for the price that it is. I find the focus a bit slow at time, but can't really complain on that for the $80 price tag.
I can see it becoming one of my favorite lenses quite easily (not that I have a lot to compare to) just on the mere fact you can get a real distinct DoF with it.
Cheers,
Greg
brmill26 04-01-2008, 02:36 PM Welcome to the 50mm club! Its short comings are few, but its image quality is basically unbeatable! Enjoy your new lenses and share some photos with us!
SpeedingSphere 04-01-2008, 06:22 PM I just got one myself and I love it! I don't know if I'm not picky or what, but I dont find the AF to be all that slow. It cant compare with my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, but its not by any means slow in my book. The quality on the other hand is comparable. Excellent glass for a cheap price tag!
Hope you get a bunch of awesome shots with it! It is extremely versatile!
motlive 04-01-2008, 11:17 PM As mentioned before, I really like the DoF that you can get out of the lense.
One quick shot I took whilst the sun was out.

lensface 04-03-2008, 10:59 AM Gotta love the nifty fifty. I agree with the previous poster, I don't find the AF that slow at all. It's faster than most kit lenses, and what more can you ask for for under $100 :-). Super super super sharp little lens. Any Canon DSLR owner should have this in their bag of tricks.

Well I think that lens is total garbage :p hehe
SpeedingSphere 04-03-2008, 06:33 PM hah! good one Alison..
You sure did get your moneys worth out of this lens! Ever consider going for a 50 1.4?
and you should work for canon selling this lens! Just walk up to people and show them your shots and they'll buy the lens even if they don't have a compatible body! Any idea about how many people you've convinced to buy the nifty?

I started a thread on the 28th February to find out how many I had convinced

Could have been the environment I was in and it was having difficulty focusing. It was a business party at a blues bar, low light, lots of movement, etc. I've tried it in other better lit areas and I'm not noticing the same slowness. Ahh well, there is always MF if one needs it.
Cheers,
Greg
slowride 04-09-2008, 07:58 AM OK, first off: this is my first post! PhotoJohn convinced me to check this place out, from a post of his in mtbr.com.
I have to say the 50mm/1.8 is one of my favorite lenses ever. I learned on a 50mm, and I feel most comfortable with it, although I am branching out into other primes: 28mm and 85mm, so far.
I'm actually considering trading in my Rebel XTi for a 5D just so I can use a 50mm at the aspect I'm used to (it's all about comfort, right?)
I'm gonna post a few pics in the thread mentioned above.
